Legislation
There is a considerable amount of legislation related to the pest control industry. Some of the more important Acts of Parliament that directly affect landowners and food manufacturers are as follows:
- 1947 Agriculture Act
Makes it the responsibility of the landowner to control rabbits (all of England and Wales is a rabbit exclusion area) - 1949 Prevention of Damage by Pests Act
Effectively makes it an offence to knowingly have an infestation and not take the appropriate action. - 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act
All premises must be kept free of health hazards - 1990 Food Safety Act
Makes it an offence to sell food so contaminated that it would be unreasonable to expect it to be eaten - 1995 General Food Hygiene Regulations
Specifically states that any windows that open onto a food preparation area must be fitted with a fly screen
In addition several other regulations stem from these acts which impact on the control of pests in manufacturing.
