Heat treatment is a new and innovative technique, and an alternative to using pesticides to control stored product insect pests. Heat treatment is particularly well suited to controlling stored product insects living in process machinery or storage bins.
The principle of heat treatment is simple, although achieving effective results is a more complex procedure. The temperature of the target infestation is raised by enclosing it in heated air. At a critical minimum temperature, of approximately 50°C, insect pests that are exposed to this temperature are killed. This temperature must be held for a period of time to ensure all life stages of the insect are killed. The time necessary will depend on the actual temperature that is maintained and the species of insect concerned.
Using the Igrox system, heat is generated using high capacity electric heating fans. The fans are used to provide effective and even heat distribution which is the key to a successful treatment. Electric heaters ensure a clean and flexible heat source that is suitable and safe for all situations. The heated air is contained either within the bin structure or below a sheet when treating machinery.
The temperature rise is then monitored closely by using both thermocouples attached to the structure, and infra-red surface thermometers. All information is recorded for inclusion in the treatment report. The procedures used have been developed as a result of a programme of trials carried out in conjunction with ADAS. Computer modelling allows us to predict the required energy and exposure period.
